NPP Newsletter: Nuclear will play key role in achieving state goals to reduce emissions

Hello friends –

We hope the start of the New Year has been good to each of you. At NPP, our New Year is off to a busy start, as we have welcomed thousands of visitors to our booth at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. More on that in a moment. But first, there was some important news coming from the Governor’s Office in Harrisburg – a new commitment to curb harmful carbon emissions that contribute to climate change.

Last Wednesday, Governor Wolf signed an executive order that set goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the Commonwealth. By 2025, Pennsylvania will work to reduce emissions by 26 percent from levels in 2005, and by 80 percent by 2050. The order also establishes a GreenGov Council to boost green and sustainable practices in state government.

As we reminded reporters covering this announcement, meeting the new targets will be achieved most cost effectively and more quickly if Pennsylvania maintains its current nuclear fleet. Nuclear power is responsible for 93 percent of carbon-free electricity in the Commonwealth, and avoids emissions that would be equivalent to taking 8 million passenger vehicles off the road.

If you haven’t already, we encourage you to use this form to contact your local legislators to voice your support for our state’s nuclear power industry. Be sure to share with friends, family members and neighbors, too.

These are facts that we shared all week at the 103rd annual Pennsylvania Farm Show. We had the pleasure of being in attendance throughout the show – exhibiting in Expo Hall where we met many passionate nuclear energy advocates from across the state. We were joined by nuclear energy employees from TMI, Limerick and Susquehanna who helped educate visitors to our booth about the many positive attributes of nuclear power.

Lastly, for NPP supporters in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities in Western PA, mark your calendars for Tues., January 29 when StateImpact Pennsylvania hosts a panel discussion on “The future of energy: Can we get to zero carbon?”

Scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m. at the Energy Innovation Center, NPP will be in attendance for the engaging discussion on how climate change affects the Keystone State and what can be done to reverse the trend of rising emissions globally. More information on the event, panel speakers and registration details are available at the link here.

As always, we encourage you to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news, information and updates about the state of Pennsylvania’s nuclear power industry.

Warm regards,

Nuclear Powers Pennsylvania
